We recently went mad at MEATmission (in a good way). The perfect storm of a friend in from out of town to whom we wanted to showcase MEATmission and their burgers, a bank holiday Monday with no food in the house and, as the recent posts on Patty & Bun and Goodman seems to indicate, an unofficial 'burger week' on the blog we thought why not round out that week with the third of the triumvirate of our favourite burgers in London. So we're here. But there's new menu items too that we want to try and put up on the blog so our order is inappropriately large.
The new thing we really wanted to sample was the Peckham Dip: roast beef and fried onions in a roll, served with a pot of bone marrow gravy and horseradish cream (on the side). This was brilliant. It would have worked well as a beef roll in its own right but dip it into the bone marrow gravy and it transforms into something spectacular, umami squared.
And not so new on the menu is the Chili Dog which scored the double whammy in both the quality of the sausage and the chili and was a huge hit at the table (we should point out below as you look at the pics that it wasn't only the two of us eating - there were in fact three of us). And the monkey fingers, chicken fillets in 'house made' hot pepper sauce with blue cheese dip. Here there's a strong acidity to the sauce rather than volcano heat and that acidity works quite well when eating alongside the burger, stripping the mouth of the burger fat keeping things if not fresh, still lively as the meal progresses.
We did burgers too, and perhaps we're getting just to familiar with them, but as we left the restaurant with our friend, all talk centred on the Chili Dog and the even more so the Peckham Dip. The MEATrestaurant series has always offered more variety than the standard pop-up burger joint, and with good drinks, a lively atmosphere and a menu sparking across the board (if you like meaty things), MEATmission & Co have a winning formula for the long term it seeems. That they are now open seven days a week seems good news and bad news in equal measure: MEATmission remains a glorious and guilty pleasure.
