We visited New Street Grill as part of our restaurant deal series: 7 days, 7 restaurants, 7 deals. 7 bargains? where we seek out value deals on the London restaurant scene.
The offer
‘Never ending Sunday Lunch, 2 courses £25, 3 courses £30, unlimited champagne or Bloody Marys
Booked with
Lastminute.com
After booking, I did notice that the deal is available direct with the restaurant.
Why I chose it
When I suggested to a friend he join me, he replied 'do they know how much champagne we can drink?' Enough said.
Downsides or drawbacks
None apparent. Indeed, major positive, available on a Sunday.
What I ate
- smoked salmon
- roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, market veg
- custard tart, cinnamon ice cream
Food quality
Food was good enough and generally at the level of other Sunday lunches around London. Yorkshire pud, good. Roast potatoes, generally the London standard. The beef, not tough, but putting your jaw to work let's say. Neither the best or the worst. Fantastic selection of market veg, hardly fitted on table. Gravy, just enough, table next to me requested extra pot.
Food quantity
Proper 3 course lunch. Market veg in abundance, enough for two even. Huge Yorkshire pud. You'll leave nicely full up.
Service
Service was exceptional. Jean-Francois, restaurant manager was a star, made me and everyone else in the restaurant feel welcome and wanted from start to finish. Say what you want about D&D, their minimum standards of service generally exceed many restaurants' maximum standards of service.
Meal deal verdict
This is unique among the meal deals I tried because you alone will determine how much value you extract from the deal, the more you drink, the better value. Also, since larger tables generally progress the meal at a slower speed than smaller tables, eating with friends here seems like a good idea (I have termed this phenomena the slowest common denominator). That said, despite dining alone, i think I polished off pretty much a bottle of champagne, and to New Street Grill's credit, my glass never once got empty before a refill materialised. As far as I could see, that was true of all tables. While I had expected the champagne on such a deal to be, shall we call it, "a bit rough", it was actually very nice.
In all respects then, this was a great deal. The mathematics, for those who care, are difficult to nail down to a decimal place but think this: the cheapest, cheapest bottle of champagne you'll ever get in a restaurant is surely £40 (or usually more). This three course lunch with champagne (and really, as fast as I could drink it, I tried you know, for journalistic purposes of course), cost me £30, so the saving is almost 60% (40/70). Interestingly, 2 courses is £25 so the additional course has a marginal cost of £5, but you can also drink another glass of champagne in this time, so £5 for smoked salmon and champagne?
New Street Grill's Sunday champagne lunch seems at times like a lottery win. This is simply fantastic.
Score
8/10
Additional note
I seriously doubt they will continue this deal for long, it is too good to be true. Get it while stocks last.
