Why I chose it
2 Michelin starred The Square is a restaurant legend and to go there is always a treat. Accordingly, on our few visits, we've always been tempted into full indulgence with the tasting menu, but every time we're there I wondered about the bargain set lunch. Now is my chance to find out.
Downsides or drawbacks
Only feeling a bit of a cheapskate
What I ate
- amuse bouche
- consomme of White Park beef with a salad of bresaola
- fillet of cod with buttered asparagus, new season's onions, Jersey Royals and peas
- banana souffle with chocolate and caramel ripple ice cream
- nougat petit fours
Food quality
Perfection.
There is no let up in the standard of the food: the ingredients are sourced it seems with the same care and the cooking is to the same high standard as the regular menu. What a great piece of cod, the Jersey Royals were so so good, and the beef consomme, simply stunning. As for dessert, looking back at our previous The Square post where we had the tasting menu (£105), we enjoyed the banana souffle on that menu also; so amazing to see it here also. Accordingly, in no way whatsoever do you feel short changed with this set lunch menu, and you even get the amuse and the nougat petit fours thrown in too (plus fantastic bread). I enjoyed this meal with a friend for whom it was his first time at The Square, he too was thoroughly impressed.
Service
Service was impeccable throughout. Not once were we made to feel like second class citizens despite two set lunches, a glass of house wine and tap water.
Meal verdict
A la carte or tasting, most mortals can't afford to eat at The Square too regularly. At £35 however, it is tempting to stop visiting other restaurants altogether and permanently eat the set lunch menu at The Square. The question for this visit was always: do you get a two star experience for a budget price? The answer is most definitively yes.
